Norovirus or winter vomiting bug
Norovirus causes diarrhoea and vomiting and, while unpleasant, it usually clears up in a few days.
Some people also experience a slight temperature, headaches, stomach cramps and aching limbs. To manage symptoms:
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
- Take paracetamol
- Get plenty of rest
- If you feel like eating, choose plain foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread
- Use special rehydration drinks from pharmacies if you have signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth or dark urine – read more about treating dehydration
- Adults can take antidiarrhoeal and/or anti-vomiting medication – although these are not suitable for everyone. You should check the medicine leaflet or ask or your pharmacist for advice before trying them
Try to avoid going to your GP and don’t visit anybody in hospital, as norovirus can spread very easily. If you need advice, call your GP or NHS 111.
